In Central Europe, occurs on the Blide from about 1200. Probably it is a Byzantine development, which was taken over by Crusaders and Arabs. Its predecessor was the 10th in Central Europe since the Detectable Zugblide century, in which up to 50 men with ropes pulled jerkily down the short lever arm. Due to the lower tensile strength of people over a presumably weigh up to about 15 tonnes of counterweight to the Blide, could use up the Zugblide only significantly lighter weight bullets. She was also less accurate because the tractive power of the team to throw litter varied.
Construction and operation of a large Blide presupposed knowledge. The "Blidenmeister" was a well-trained specialist.
In Wolfram von Eschenbach's Willehalm (around 1200) is a "drîbock" (111.9) mentioned in connection with other siege engines - this is the earliest evidence for this machine. According to the "Marbach annals" it was first used by Emperor Otto IV at the siege of the town and castle of Weissensee in Thuringia in 1212.
